Finally... A billion Naira Industry is Born!
About 11 months ago, I wrote an article about a potential billion Naira industry that Nigerians can capture easily. I was thinking of the potentials of developing car assembling industry. You can read it here. This idea came to me when I got involved in a car accident and the left front wheel and axle of my car were totalled. The parts were purchased and assembled back into the car and the car has been fine since them.
Little did I know that Nigeria was already working on an idea like this. A few months after that, the Federal Government of Nigeria came up with an automotive policy. There was a lot of argument about the merits and demerits of the idea. At the end of the day it became politicised, just as every policy is in Nigeria. I also engaged a few people offline about the idea. Many Nigerians were of the opinion that they'd rather buy a 20 year old car made in Japan than buy a newly assembled car in Nigeria.
The truth of the matter is if we don't start, then we will never do it. Today, the President of the Nigeria. Goodluck Jonathan, made a post on his Facebook page about the new automobile industry in Nigeria. Less than a year after I made that post, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Innoson have started assembling made in Nigeria cars. You can also read the post here.
Like I tell anyone who is willing to listen, this is the most exciting time to be a Nigerian. And am I glad to see the changes that are happening in my country.
